Performing Arts & Productions

led by Ms. Miller

As the Topeka Public Schools Performing Arts Signature School, we provide our students with a variety of opportunities in the area of performing arts. All students, Kindergarten through 5th grade, receive a 30 minute performing arts lesson by Ms. Miller every week. This can be acting lesson, improv lessons, prop-making or understanding the history of theater.

Our school also offers opportunities for students to perform in two annual productions. For the Fall, State Street puts on a musical and in the Spring we put on a play. Students in 3rd through 5th grade have the opportunity to audition for their desired parts. Students who do not make it on the stage also have the opportunity to work with the tech crew to help with prop-making, stage transitions, sound and lighting.

Theater can be a positive influence on a students' academics and social development. When students develop empathy through their understanding of fictional characters in the works they read, write and perform, this often leads students to a better understanding of their own real-life relationships with family, friends and peers. No matter if it's on class or on the stage, students work collaboratively to produce opportunities to act, sing, dance, create costumes and props, as well as sets that create a work of art that will stay with them.
